The addition of collage to the painting surface creates texture and excitement. But there is another reason I'm enthusiastic about teaching this technique - the element and principles of design are taught to each student in college art classes, but not so often in the watercolor workshop setting. Because the workshops are designed to be a short dose of learning, it is assumed that there is a common basis of knowledge amongst the students, I am aware of the inconsistent backgrounds of my students so I am always looking for ways to engage their learning their learning in a concrete, enjoyable way. Collage has proven to be a wonderful way to introduce or review these very important concepts. We all learn more effectively if the activity is fun!
